When you think of Greek islands and picture those cliffs lined with classic white buildings, you are certainly thinking of Santorini. As the other main star of the Cyclades, Santorini welcomes millions of visitors up the side of its exceptionally breathtaking volcanic caldera.
The main caldera-side towns of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia all overlook this central bay, which you can also cruise to visit hot springs and sail through the small internal volcanic islands. One of the island’s popular hike runs from Fira to Oia through small white houses and boutique hotel terraces along the cliff, dropping you off in Oia searching for the perfect sunset photo shot.
On the slightly quieter opposite shore, towns like Perissa and Kamari offer beaches with a variety of sand colours ranging from white to red and pink to black. Alternatively, someone can visit Akrotiri at the south side of the island once home to one of the most advanced settlements of the Bronze Age before the volcano buried it.
