January 27, 2022Kythira and Antikythira
The islands of Kythira and Antikythira are technically part of the Ionian island group even though they are nowhere near the rest of the islands. Instead, you will find them in between Crete and the mainland.
This remote location is not easily included on an island hopping adventure and so they remain somewhat off the beaten track – perfect for an adventure! They have a less commercial feel than the rest of the Ionian Islands.
Kythira is a medium-sized island with an attractive green interior, natural beach and a few traditional beach resorts. One thing Kythira does have in common with its Ionian neighbors is the architecture, which is strongly influenced by the Venetians, who had ruled the island during the medieval age. On a hill above Chora, there is a Medieval Castle, a vestige of the Venetian era, which boasts an incredible view of the Aegean Sea. Kythira Chora is also in the hills above the popular beach at Kapsali. Also worth visiting is small harbour village Agia Pelagia in the north, and the pretty Avlemonas in the east.
Antikythira is a small and remote island with an interesting history some way to the south of Kythira. Tourists do not often visit it however; you can combine and visit it along with Kythira.
